Against my better judgement, Evan was unzipping the tent. He was reaching out his hand that had a tight grip on the bear spray and I focused hard on the idea that everything would be okay. My magic could protect us, right? My necklace wasn’t glowing, but I still wasn’t sure exactly how it worked.

Something moved outside the tent, then again. Evan peered out of the door and I braced myself for the possibility that I would have to use some sort of attack magic. Did I even know how to do that? Evan made a strange noise and I gulped nervously, but then I realized it was a giggle.

“Attie, you’re not going to believe this,” he laughed. He pulled the door open wider and Ren leapt inside and brushed his furry cat body up against my legs. “He tracked you down. I didn’t know cats could do that.”

“Yeah, they are mysterious creatures, for sure,” I sighed. What was the coven cat doing all the way up here? Maybe he had a message from my mom, but he wouldn’t talk in front of Evan, right?

“Are you planning to just sleep in your underwear?” I asked, gawking as he shimmied out of his jeans.

“Is that alright?” he paused. “I run hot, if I wear pajamas, I will cook myself like a turkey.”

“It’s more than alright,” I grinned. Ren coughed to remind me that he was here, as if I could forget. “I, however, am almost constantly cold.” I pulled a pair of fleecy pajamas from my rucksack and looked up at him as he laughed.

“Whatever makes you happy,” he said, turning to face the fabric wall so that I could change with some privacy. I appreciated that he was being respectful, but it seemed a little unnecessary given that I had just watched him undress and hadn’t blinked once.

Any hopes I had of sleeping in my boyfriend’s arms were quickly dashed when Ren decided to sit on the pillows between our two heads. I rolled my eyes at him just as Evan shut off the lights.

The next morning started earlier than any of us had planned. After spending a few years in my city apartment with blackout blinds over the windows, I was used to deciding when I woke up. The sun had made a rude appearance before five o’clock and the bird song was so loud that I thought they were tweeting through a microphone.

Ren was
